gStep

Privacy policy

Last updated:

gStep is a browser extension for Chrome and Brave that shows roughly how many steps, and optionally how many calories, each walking route in Google Maps directions takes. It is made by Futureformed.

The short version

gStep keeps everything on your device. It has no server, no account, no analytics, no ads and no tracking, and it never sends your information anywhere.

What gStep handles

Your height, weight and unit choices

You can enter these in gStep's settings so it can work out your step length and calories. They are saved in your browser's extension storage on your device (chrome.storage.local). They are not synced to your Google account, and gStep never sends them anywhere.

Route details on Google Maps pages

On Google Maps pages, gStep reads the distance, walking time and "via" name that Google shows for each walking route, so it can label each route with an estimate. This happens entirely in your browser. gStep does not store this information or send it anywhere, and it runs on no other websites.

What gStep does not do

The Ko-fi link

gStep's settings popup has a "Buy me a coffee on Ko-fi" link to ko-fi.com/gstep. Nothing happens unless you click it. If you do, Ko-fi opens in a new tab, gStep passes no information about you, and Ko-fi's own privacy policy applies to anything you do there.

Your control over your data

You can change or clear your height and weight at any time in gStep's settings. Removing gStep from your browser deletes everything it stored.

Chrome Web Store User Data Policy

gStep's use of information complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. gStep uses the information it handles only to show its step and calorie estimates.

Changes to this policy

If gStep's handling of data changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top changed.
